Moved by the images and stories that she recently saw about the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Librarian Emily Rogers, organized a group of friends and went to Louisiana to make a difference. This past October, Emily, along with 3 friends, loaded up a van and a camper with donated items and a week's worth of supplies and headed down to Slidell, LA. While in Slidell, they volunteered with Hilltop Rescue, a disaster relief organization, to assist in mucking out houses, tearing down dry wall, and removing items from damaged houses. They also volunteered with Noah's Wish, an animal rescue organization. The location that they volunteered at currently houses over 1000 pets of all kinds, the majority being dogs. Most of the dogs spent the better part of their days in crates, so Emily and her friends assisted in walking the dogs and cleaning out the crates.
Rogers, along with the other volunteers, will talk about their experience on
Wednesday, Nov. 9,
at 2 p.m. in the 3rd floor Computer Lab of the Cofrin Library. They will share photos they took of the devastated area, along with talking about how people can get involved in the relief efforts. Collections will be taken for the relief groups they volunteered with, namely Hilltop Rescue and Noah's Wish, along with the Red Cross.
Pre-registration is not required for this program.
